Light shines on those who do right;

joy belongs to those who are honest.
Rejoice in the Lord, you who do right.
Praise His holy name.

Psalm 97:11, 12

Dear St. Mary's Parents.

St. Mary's School faculty/staff welcomes your child to the 2008-2009 school year.  The first day of school starts at 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 7th and ends at 11:30 a.m.  We are excited about the first day of school and look forward to seeing everyone!  Our Home & School officers will join us for our first day of school to take pictures of our families.  There will be no lunch served or Aftercare on the first day of school.  You child should report directly to his/her classroom on the first day.  Because you may have questions about the start of the school year, the following information is provided for your assistance.

Morning Procedure:  Friday, August 8th will be our first full day (8:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.).  On Friday morning and each morning of the school year, we request that upon arriving at school, students drop off backpacks and lunchboxes at the door of his/her classroom, and proceed to the gym.  We have supervision in the gym beginning at 7:30 a.m.  Our morning prayer, pledge, PeaceBuilders pledge and song will begin at 8:00 a.m. in the gym each morning.  Parents are welcome to join us in for this very important start to our day.

Absences/Tardies:  If you child must be absent or tardy, parents should call the School Office at 282-3397 between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m.

Although we realize that emergencies occur on occasion, we expect students to arrive at school on time.  It is important for your child to receive all the instruction that is available to them.  Also, it is disruptive to the class when a student arrives late or leaves early.  Our Diocese has a policy that four tardies becomes an absence.  At the end of each nine weeks we will be doing a non-uniform day for students who have not been tardy or left early during the nine week grading period.  If a student must arrive late or leave early for a doctor/dentist appointment, an excuse from the doctor/dentist office is needed to be eligible for the none uniform day.

School Bulletin:  St. Mary's believes that communication is a key factor of any organization.  The youngest child in each family will receive a Family Bulletin in your communication envelope each Tuesday.  After reading your bulletin, please return the envelope each Tuesday.  After reading your bulletin, please return the envelope with your signature to your child's classroom teacher on the following day.  Thank you.

Lunch Program:  A monthly lunch calendar will be sent home each month with the school bulletin on Tuesdays.  We will still need parents to help serve lunch each day from 11:00 a.m. until 12:15 p.m.  Please call the School Office if you would like to volunteer to help.  This is a fun way to spend time with the children and get to know other parents.  Mrs. Manhard will be available the first week of school so you can put money in your child's pre-paid lunch account.  We ask that you pay ahead for lunches.  This does not mean your child has to eat each day; the money will be kept in their account and deducted each time he/she buys lunch.

Water Bottles:  We are aware of how important water is to hydrate the body, as well as the brain.  Studies have been conducted that show drinking water in school helps with the learning process.  Please send water bottles to school with your child(ren) each day.  We ask that the water bottles have the sports cap lids which help to avoid spills.  The water bottles must contain water; no other drinks are allowed.

BoxTops 4 Education:  Thanks to each and everyone who saved BoxTops this year!  We made over $1,000.  This is the most we have ever made!  Please continue to save all your BoxTops during the summer.  Please let Denise Fluhr know if you have any questions.

Tyson Project A+:  We have a new Label Collection Program.  It is called Tyson Project A+.  For every Tyson Project A+ label your save, our school will receive 24 cents.  You can drop the labels off at the School Office or put them in the BoxTop box located between to the two sets of entrance doors into the school.  If you have any questions, please contact Denise Fluhr.  Thank you, Denise, for taking on this project!

Handbook:  There will be a new area addressed in the discipline section of our handbook which will address harassment, intimidation and bullying.  We felt this should be added to go along with our PeaceBuilders program and our motto "Anchored In Love" so there is no question of who we are and what we allow at our school.  Your St. Mary's School Board worked on this during the summer.

I hope you are enjoying a wonderful summer and enjoying some time together with your family!  I hope, too, that your child is excited about coming to school on August 7th.  If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.  I can be reached by email at RM7359@yahoo.com.  I can also be reached at the School Office through June; the office will be closed for the month of July.  I look forward to a great school year!

God Bless,

Randi McKee

Emergency/Illness

II. Medication

pages 21 & 22

Schools shall not dispense prescription medication to students except when prescribed by a doctor and provided by the parent.  A designated staff member, either the child's teacher or office personnel, must always dispense this medicine.

Students taking prescribed medication either at home or during school hours must also take this medication when participating in off-campus trips (day trips and overnight trips).

If a child is on medication (either prescription or non-prescription 'over-the-counter' medication) that is administered during school hours or while on off-campus trips, the parent must submit the appropriate Medication Authorization or Non- Prescription Medication Authorization form.  Both forms are available in the school office.  These forms must be completed and signed by the parent.

Both prescription and non- prescription medications should be brought to the school office in the original packaging or prescription bottle.  The pharmacist may be instructed to dispense the medication in two bottles; one for home and one for school.

All medicines must be brought to the school office by the parent.  Students may not carry medicines on their person during the school year and/or school-related functions.  The only exception to this policy is as stated in paragraph III. Asthma Medications.
