The Tri-Cities area of Tennessee and
Virginia, of which Johnson City is a part, is a dynamic region that
offers many resources and programs to its school children.
- Fifth grade students spend three
days at Cedar Creek Learning Center, an environmental camp located in
nearby Greene County.
- Our students are privileged to be
able to enjoy the talents of area storytellers who visit our school,
as well as attending the National Storytelling Festival in
Jonesborough and other storytelling programs offered by the
Storytelling Department at East Tennessee State University.
- Many of St. Mary's students attend
performances at Barter Theatre, a professional theater in Abingdon,
Virginia, as well as those offered by the Johnson City Community
Theater and the Jonesborough Repertory Theater.
- Hands On! Museum in downtown
Johnson City offers many educational programs to children in the area.
- The Johnson City Symphony sponsors
children's programs and family concerts, in addition to its regular
concert schedule.
- Area ballet companies that offer
performances each Christmas and spring include the Johnson City Ballet
Company and the Bristol Ballet Company.
- Nearby historic sites utilized by
St. Mary's teachers in enhancing the learning of our students include
Rocky Mount Historic Museum, Tipton-Haynes Farm, and the historic town
of Jonesborough.
- St. Mary students visit Bays
Mountain Planetarium in Kingsport.
- Community leaders, artists, and
other professionals visit our school to share their talent,
experiences, and expertise with our students.
- Marty Silvers, a Park Ranger with
Warriors State Park in Kingsport, Tennessee, comes yearly to St.
Mary's campus to visit each classroom. Students get first hand
information and experimentation with science topics such as food webs
and planting of new saplings on our campus.
- Seventh and eighth grade classes
participate independently in an overnight Spiritual Retreat.
